Google Local Services Ads in Canada: what they are, who can run them, what they cost

Local Services Ads (LSAs) are the listings with the green "Google Guaranteed" check mark at the very top of Google. You pay per lead, not per click, and only eligible categories can run them. Here is how they work in Canada, in plain language, as of October 2026.

What they are

Local Services Ads are a separate ad product from Google Ads. They show at the top of the search results for local service searches (“furnace repair calgary”, “plumber near me”), with your business name, rating, hours and a badge:

  • Google Guaranteed for home services. Google has checked the business’s licences, insurance and background, and backs jobs booked through the ad with a satisfaction guarantee up to a lifetime cap per customer.
  • Google Screened for professional services such as lawyers, real estate agents and financial planners. Google has checked licences and background, but there is no money-back guarantee.

You set a weekly budget and Google charges you for each valid lead: a phone call, a message or a booking that comes through the ad. There are no keywords. You choose the job types and the service area, and Google decides when to show you.

Who can run them in Canada

Eligibility depends on both the category and the city, and Google expands it over time. Home-service categories (HVAC, plumbing, electrical and locksmith were the first in Canada, with more added since) and the professional categories under Google Screened are the main groups. Google’s own eligibility tool is the only reliable answer for your trade and your city, and we check it before quoting anything.

Quebec has had different rules and availability; if you serve Quebec, check separately.

What Google asks for

Expect to provide:

  • Business registration details and the owner’s identity.
  • Trade licences where your province or city requires them.
  • Proof of general liability insurance.
  • A background check on the owner (and sometimes field staff) through Google’s partner.
  • A Google Business Profile with reviews. LSA ratings pull from your Google reviews, so the review process matters here too.

Verification usually takes a few weeks. Nothing is charged until you’re approved and the ads are live.

What a lead costs

Google sets a price range per lead by category and area, and you can bid above or below it. In Canada, trades have generally seen cost per lead in the tens of dollars; in the United States, a February 2026 benchmark across 888 contractors put the blended home-services cost per lead at about US$53 (SearchLight Digital). Google’s cost estimator shows the expected range for your category and city before you commit to a budget.

For comparison, the top-of-page bid for a single click on “plumber calgary” ran up to $53 and on “hvac calgary” up to $95 over the 12 months to August 2026 (Google Keyword Planner, Calgary area). A click is not a lead; a lead is someone who called or messaged you.

How Google ranks the ads

Google says ranking depends on your review score and count, your responsiveness to leads, your hours, your proximity to the searcher, and whether you’ve had complaints. In practice:

  • Answer every call. Unanswered LSA calls hurt your position and still count as leads in some cases.
  • Keep reviews flowing. Rating and count are the most visible factors.
  • Set honest hours and be reachable during them.
  • Keep your service area tight to where you actually work, so leads are valid.

Disputing leads

You can dispute leads that are spam, outside your area, for a service you don’t offer, or from someone who never intended to hire. Valid disputes are credited. The window is limited, so review leads at least weekly and keep notes.

The 2026 change

Starting in August 2026, Google began moving Local Services Ads for selected categories in the United States into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals. The placement and pay-per-lead model stay; the dashboard, weekly budget and manual per-lead bidding change. Google has not published a timeline for Canada as of this writing. If you run LSAs, expect to manage them inside Google Ads eventually.

A plan for a Calgary trade

  1. Check eligibility for your category and city in Google’s tool.
  2. Get the documents together: registration, licences, insurance, owner ID.
  3. Fix your Google Business Profile first: reviews, services, hours. LSAs borrow all three.
  4. Apply, complete the background check, wait for verification.
  5. Set service areas you actually cover and a weekly budget matched to your capacity.
  6. Make sure every call is answered, including after hours.
  7. Review leads weekly, dispute the invalid ones, adjust the budget before the busy season (December for furnaces, July for air conditioning, after hail for roofs).

Local Services Ads questions

Do Local Services Ads replace Google Ads?

No. They sit above the regular ads and only show for some searches and categories. Most trades that qualify run LSAs first because the cost per lead is lower, and add search ads only for specific high-value jobs. Lead volume from LSAs alone is usually not enough on its own.

How much does a lead cost in Calgary?

Google sets the price by category and area and lets you bid per lead. Canadian trades have typically seen tens of dollars per lead, and Google’s cost estimator shows the range for your category before you spend. Compare that with the $18 to $95 per click that plumbing and HVAC searches in Calgary have bid for at the top of the page.

What if I get a bad lead?

You can dispute leads that are spam, outside your area, or for a service you don’t offer, and Google credits the valid disputes. Disputes have a time window, so reviewing leads weekly matters.

Can Alpha Seed set this up for us?

Yes, inside the Growth plan. We check eligibility, gather the documents, submit, set service areas and budget, review leads weekly and file disputes. Ad spend is paid to Google from your own account.
